6th Annual Reggie Dawson Memorial Math Tournament
The sixth annual Reggie Dawson Memorial Math Tournament is Saturday, April 22, 2017, at Mattie Lively Elementary School. More than 100 third and fourth-grade students will compete both individually and as part of third-grade and fourth-grade teams.
Since its start, the event has encouraged the formation of math teams at the younger elementary level. The majority of the district's nine elementary schools now compete. The event is one of three major mathematics competitions held locally to test students’ individual computation and team ciphering skills. The Southeast Bulloch High School Math Department hosts the Penny Sikes Math Tournament for fifth- and sixth- grade students, and older middle and high school students compete in the annual Georgia Southern University Invitational Mathematics Tournament.
The Reggie Dawson Memorial Math Tournament was named for a former Statesboro High School educator whose life and career were cut tragically short when he lost his battle with cancer in 2010. Local math teachers wanted to honor his memory and the excellent example he set for team work and academic excellence by naming the tournament in his memory.
Julia P. Bryant Elementary School’s Math Department founded the tournament and organizes the event, which is open to teams from any public, private or home schools in Bulloch County. The Bulloch County Foundation for Public Education has sponsored the tournament since its formation with annual innovation grants of $1,000.
